What Actually Happens at Camp?

At camp this summer, Minnesota ODP players will be competing and training with players from the other 13 state associations in Region II. In addition to the Minnesota coaches traveling with all our groups, the players work with Regional Staff Coaches. Regional Staff coaches are all USSF certified and come from a cross-section of club and college coaching. The expected standard for a Regional Coach is to hold a USSF A License or the equivalent award and experience.

At the 96B, 96G and 95G age groups, the players attend camp as a pool and play in small-sided games and train sometimes as a uniquely Minnesota group and at other times are mixed with players from other states. At these ages, every day at camp some of the players who have performed at a high level are trained in a Regional Pool. The Regional Pool changes every day based on performance in every aspect of the camp. The progress of players this summer is recorded by Region II and kept for reference for future camps and for USSF Youth National Team selections.

At the 95B, 94B&G, 93B&G, 92B&G and 91B&G age groups, Minnesota sends 18 player rosters to camp. On the boys’ side, the Minnesota players train together with State and Regional Staff and then compete with the other 13 state associations in evening games. Every evening a Regional Pool is selected to train the following morning. The players in pool training changes daily. Players who perform at a high level throughout the week are then asked to holdover for an additional week of training as part of the Regional Pool.

On the girls’ side, the Minnesota team also plays together against other states. However, their daily training is most often conducted with the players mixed in with players from other states. Like the boys, the girls have a daily Regional Pool training and at the end of the week, a Regional Pool for the year is announced. The girls will also ask players selected to the Regional Pool to stay for an additional "holdover" week.

On the daily posting from camp, you can follow the competitive success of the Minnesota State Select teams in competition with the other states. You can also follow the daily recognition of individual players asked to train with the Regional Pool. The final pool listing identifies the players who have been selected to the Region II Pool for 2008–09.
